In a recent interview with The Sun on Sunday, March 15, 2026, Dr. Adetokunbo Pearse, a public affairs analyst and convener of Reset Lagos Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has criticized what he described as a political move aimed at preventing the opposition from presenting a presidential candidate in the 2027 general elections.
Speaking during a political discussion, Pearse expressed concern over a statement he attributed to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, according to him, Wike allegedly suggested that the Peoples Democratic Party should not field a presidential candidate in the 2027 election.
Pearse said such a suggestion raises serious questions about the state of political competition in the country and argued that discouraging a major opposition party from presenting a candidate could weaken democratic participation and limit the choices available to voters during the election.
The analyst claimed that the idea may indicate fear among political actors who believe they might struggle in a truly competitive election and suggested that some politicians might prefer a situation where the ruling party faces little or no serious challenge at the polls.
Pearse explained that democracy depends on active competition among parties, in his view, elections should provide citizens with multiple candidates and political platforms so they can decide who should govern the country.
He further stated that if opposition parties are prevented from presenting candidates, elections could become more like a confirmation process rather than a genuine contest, according to him, such a development would weaken public trust in Nigeria’s democratic system.
”Can you imagine Wike’s mission that he made clear to us in PDP, is that we should not field a candidate for president in 2027. What does that tell you? Can you see how afraid they are? They are so scared that they don’t want to go for election,” he said......…
