TINUBU APPROVES FINAL SIX-MONTH TENURE EXTENSION FOR CUSTOMS BOSS ADENIYI

The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Friday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

According to the statement, Adeniyi’s current tenure was originally expected to end on August 1, 2026, following an earlier extension granted by the President.

The Presidency explained that the additional six months would provide the Customs chief with the opportunity to consolidate ongoing reforms, particularly the implementation of the National Single Window project, while also ensuring a smooth leadership transition within the service.

During the extension period, Adeniyi is expected to work closely with the Nigeria Customs Service Board to oversee the promotion of qualified officers to the rank of Comptroller of Customs and facilitate the retirement of personnel who have either attained the mandatory retirement age of 60 years or completed 35 years in service.

Adeniyi joined the Nigeria Customs Service after graduating from Obafemi Awolowo University in the late 1980s and steadily rose through the ranks over the years.

His career progression saw him attain the rank of Deputy Comptroller in 2012, Comptroller in 2017, and Assistant Comptroller-General in 2020. He was appointed Acting Deputy Comptroller-General in January 2023 before President Tinubu named him Comptroller-General of Customs in June 2023.

Onanuga noted in the statement that the tenure extension is intended to support the completion of key reforms within the service and ensure an orderly succession process.
