POLICE ORDER DISCIPLINARY ACTION OVER VIRAL VIDEO OF OFFICER THREATENING RESIDENTS

The Nigeria Police Force has condemned the actions of ASP Newton Isokpehi following the circulation of a viral video showing the officer making threatening remarks against members of the public who filmed police activities.

This was contained in a statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, on Thursday in Abuja.

The police described the conduct displayed in the video as unacceptable, unprofessional, and contrary to the ethics and operational standards of the Force.

According to the statement, the officer’s behaviour does not reflect the ongoing reform efforts aimed at strengthening transparency, accountability, professionalism, and citizen-centred policing across the country.

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, was quoted as repeatedly maintaining that Nigerians have the right to lawfully record police officers while carrying out their duties, provided such actions do not obstruct operations, endanger safety, or interfere with lawful police responsibilities.

The Force disclosed that the officer has already been identified and directed to report to the Anambra State Police Command headquarters, where disciplinary proceedings against him have commenced immediately.

The statement stressed that the Nigeria Police Force would not tolerate acts of intimidation, threats, abuse of office, or any behaviour capable of eroding public confidence in law enforcement agencies.

Police authorities further reiterated that recording police operations remains a legitimate means of ensuring public accountability and transparency and should not expose citizens to harassment or intimidation from officers.

The Force added that the outcome of the disciplinary measures taken against the officer would be made public in due course.

The police also appreciated Nigerians for their continued cooperation and constructive engagement toward improving professionalism, accountability, and policing standards nationwide.
