The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has assured residents and political stakeholders of adequate security and professional conduct by security personnel ahead of the forthcoming governorship election in Ekiti State.
The assurance was given on Thursday during the Election Stakeholders’ Meeting and signing of the Peace Accord held in Ado-Ekiti ahead of the election.
The meeting had in attendance representatives of the Independent National Electoral Commission, political parties, candidates, civil society organisations, traditional rulers, religious leaders, security agencies, members of the diplomatic community, as well as the National Peace Committee led by former Head of State, Abdulsalami Abubakar.
Speaking at the event, the IGP commended INEC and the National Peace Committee for their continued efforts toward peaceful democratic participation and strengthening confidence in the nation’s electoral process. He also praised Abdulsalami Abubakar for his sustained commitment to peace, unity, and democratic stability in the country.
The police chief reaffirmed the readiness of the Nigeria Police Force, alongside other security agencies under the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security, to ensure a peaceful, secure, free, and credible governorship election across the state.
According to him, detailed deployment plans and operational strategies have already been concluded for the 16 local government areas, 154 wards, and more than 2,400 polling units across Ekiti State.
He said personnel and operational assets would be strategically deployed to safeguard voters, electoral officials, election observers, and other participants throughout the exercise.
The IGP further assured that officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force would remain professional, neutral, and law-abiding during the election period. He urged political actors to respect the provisions of the Peace Accord and conduct their activities peacefully.
He also encouraged residents of the state to freely exercise their constitutional rights without fear or intimidation, assuring them of adequate security before, during, and after the election.
The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its commitment to protecting democratic values, maintaining public order, and ensuring peaceful elections across the country.
This was contained in a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, on Thursday in Abuja.
