NO RANK ABOVE ACCOUNTABILITY— POLICE DISMISS OFFICERS OVER DELTA KILLING

The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the dismissal of four officers implicated in the fatal shooting of 28-year-old Mene Ogidi in Effurun, Delta State, declaring that no officer will be shielded from accountability.

Addressing journalists, the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, said the Inspector-General of Police had directed that the public be kept fully informed as the case progresses.

The incident occurred on April 26, 2026, after the deceased received a parcel from a friend in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, delivered through a driver. He later proceeded to a motor park to waybill the parcel to Sapele, with the receiver’s details clearly written.

Police said the parcel was searched and found to contain a fabricated Beretta pistol and four rounds of 9mm live ammunition. Witnesses at the scene carried out a citizen’s arrest and alerted the police.

Officers led by ASP Nuhu responded and took custody of the suspect. However, in what the Force described as a breach of established procedures, the officer allegedly shot and killed the already restrained and unarmed suspect.

The remains of the deceased have been deposited at a mortuary, while a formal autopsy will be conducted as part of the evidence for prosecution.

Findings from an investigation ordered by the Force leadership indicated that the actions of ASP Nuhu and members of his team amounted to professional misconduct, abuse of office, and conduct likely to cause a breach of public peace, resulting in the unlawful killing.

Reaffirming its stance on due process, the police stated:

“The Force wishes to be unequivocal: no criminal suspicion, however grave, justifies extra-judicial action. Every suspect, regardless of the nature of allegations against them, is entitled to due process under the law.”

ASP Nuhu and three other officers have since been arrested and are currently in custody. The Force also confirmed that internal disciplinary procedures have been concluded, with all indicted officers recommended for dismissal.

“The Force wishes to state clearly and without ambiguity that all indicted officers have been recommended for dismissal from the Nigeria Police Force. The Police Service Commission has reviewed and ratified this recommendation. Their dismissal is therefore confirmed and takes immediate effect.”

The case file has been forwarded to the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation for legal review and prosecution, with the police pledging full cooperation.

Meanwhile, the driver who delivered the parcel, along with two vigilante members connected to the incident, remain at large. Tactical teams have been deployed to facilitate their arrest.

Reassuring the public, the police said:

“The Nigeria Police Force reassures Nigerians, particularly the family of Mr. Mene Ogidi, that justice will be served in this matter.”

The Force also extended condolences to the family of the deceased and urged members of the public to remain calm and cooperate with ongoing investigations.
