The Kano State Government has announced plans to begin an expanded distribution of potable water across the state within the next week. The rollout follows the advanced stages of rehabilitation works on major water treatment plants, reservoirs, and regional schemes.
According to a statement issued on Monday by Maryam Abdulqadir, Director of Public Enlightenment at the Ministry of Water Resources, Environment and Climate Change, significant progress has been recorded under the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
Dr. Dahiru Muhammad Hashim, the Commissioner for Water Resources, stated during a recent media briefing that key infrastructure is approaching full operational readiness.
“Work is advancing on schedule. We are highly optimistic that trial testing and the commencement of broader distribution will start in the coming days,” Hashim said.
Major facilities nearing operational status include the Challawa Water Treatment Plant—which supplies over half of Greater Kano’s water demand alongside the Tamburawa and Goron Dutse reservoirs. The state is also reviving several dormant regional water schemes to improve access in various local government areas.
Recent rehabilitation efforts include restoring a critical 15.6-kilometre transmission line to Goron Dutse, desilting reservoirs with a combined capacity exceeding 40 million litres, and repairing essential pumps and filtration units. Nine of the state’s 19 regional water schemes are currently undergoing restoration, with some already producing water after years of inactivity.
The interventions are part of a broader strategy to bridge Greater Kano’s daily water supply deficit, which the ministry estimates exceeds 300 million litres. In addition to infrastructure upgrades, the government is addressing ongoing challenges related to unstable electricity and aging equipment.
The ministry has urged residents to safeguard public utilities by protecting water infrastructure and reporting vandalism or illegal connections. Authorities plan to release specific community distribution schedules as trial testing concludes and full operations commence.
