Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun personally vouched for activist Sunday Igboho’s conduct, enabling him to briefly return to Nigeria in 2023 to bury his mother.
Human rights lawyer Pelumi Olajengbesi revealed this in a social media post following a visit with Igboho, whom he previously represented. Igboho had fled Nigeria for the Benin Republic in 2021 amid legal and security pressures.
According to Olajengbesi, when Igboho’s mother passed away in 2023, the grieving activist insisted on returning home to perform final burial rites. Olajengbesi subsequently reached out to Governor Abiodun for intervention.
Abiodun reportedly consulted on the matter, noting that President Bola Tinubu would support individuals operating within the bounds of the law, and agreed to guarantee Igboho’s conduct for a seven-day grace period.
Igboho successfully returned to Nigeria for the funeral ceremonies and departed the country immediately afterward. Olajengbesi noted that the wider legal and political issues surrounding Igboho were later resolved through engagement with several prominent Nigerian leaders.
