Vice President Kashim Shettima arrived in New York on Monday to lead Nigeria’s delegation to the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, stating that the nation will champion multilateral cooperation and urgent reforms of global institutions.
Representing President Bola Tinubu, Shettima emphasized that Nigeria’s engagements will be anchored on national interest and the push for a more equitable international financial and political architecture.
“Our message in New York is clear. Nigeria believes in multilateralism, but the institutions that govern our world must become more representative, equitable, and responsive to the realities of today,” Shettima said.
The high-level General Debate runs from September 22 to 28 under the theme “Restoring trust, managing transformation: a United Nations that delivers for all.” During the sessions, the Vice President is scheduled to deliver Nigeria’s national statement.
Nigeria’s delegation will focus heavily on sustainable development, climate finance, technology access, and securing stronger African representation in global decision-making bodies through a series of high-level meetings and bilateral talks.
Shettima is accompanied by Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Minister of State for Budget and Economic Planning Doris Uzoka-Anite.
Upon arrival, they were received by senior officials, including Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Minister of Foreign Affairs Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, and Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Jimoh Ibrahim.
