Former Jigawa State Governor and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) founding member, Alhaji Sule Lamido, has criticized Nigerian politicians for exploiting young citizens as political labor rather than investing in their future.
Speaking in Dutse on Sunday, Lamido explained that he intentionally convened a meeting with youths instead of political elites to address growing concerns over the lack of mentorship and character formation for the younger generation.
“We, the leaders, have abandoned Nigerian youths in terms of moulding them, character formation, inculcating brotherhood, sisterhood, human empathy and all those values that make human beings,” Lamido said.
He warned that politicians are increasingly exposing young people to thuggery, abuse, and divisive politics centered on individuals rather than constructive principles.
Lamido urged youths across various political affiliations—including the PDP, APC, and ADC—not to view one another as enemies, noting that they share common struggles and aspirations regardless of party lines.
Calling for a shift in leadership approach, the former governor challenged contemporary leaders to invest in youth education, employment, and moral development to ensure the nation’s future stability and progress.
