FG DISBURSES N11.8BN INTEREST-FREE LOANS TO 6,842 TERTIARY INSTITUTION STAF

The Federal Government has released a total of N11.8 billion to support 6,842 academic and non-academic staff across tertiary institutions nationwide under the Tertiary Institutions Staff Support Fund.

The beneficiaries were drawn from 141 institutions, covering federal universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.

Introduced in August 2025, the TISSF is a programme funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and TETFund, designed to improve the welfare, career growth and financial stability of staff within Nigeria’s tertiary education system.

As a joint initiative of the FME and TETFund, the scheme provides interest-free loans aimed at strengthening staff welfare and supporting professional development.

Under the programme, eligible academic and non-academic staff can access loans of up to N10 million at zero per cent interest.

Data obtained from the Federal Ministry of Education’s website indicates that 34,000 applicants from 219 institutions have been verified so far.

The breakdown shows that staff of federal universities account for the highest number of applicants at 59 per cent, followed by polytechnics with 23 per cent and colleges of education with 18 per cent.

In addition, under the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative, 240 e-tricycles have been distributed across 12 institutions.

Key figures published on the ministry’s website state: “Loans up to N10m per staff (0% interest); N11.8bn disbursed to 6,842 beneficiaries from 141 institutions.

“34,000 verified applicants from 219 institutions; Federal universities (59%), polytechnics (23%), COEs (18%); minimum five years to retirement required for eligibility.”

Other programmes being implemented under the initiative include the EduRevamp Teacher Platform, a digital training system introduced earlier in the year to enhance teachers’ capacity, and the School Safety Portal, developed in collaboration with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps to strengthen school security management.

The ministry disclosed that the EduRevamp platform, unveiled at the first National Teacher Summit in January 2026, has recorded “37,000 registered users, with 18,000 teachers fully enrolled in its training modules.”

The platform offers audio and video lessons, case studies and certification opportunities to support continuous professional development.

Meanwhile, the School Safety Portal, established under the School Safety Act of 2025, currently hosts data on more than 156,000 geolocated schools nationwide.
