Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has warned officers and personnel of the Nigeria Police Force against misconduct, abuse of authority and actions capable of damaging the image of the Force, stressing that indiscipline will no longer be tolerated.
The police chief gave the warning on Friday during an official visit to the Edo State Police Command in Benin, where he addressed officers on the need for professionalism, accountability and discipline in policing.
Disu expressed concern over recent incidents involving police officers across the country, particularly the killing of a suspect by an Assistant Superintendent of Police in Delta State and the arrest of officers accused of extorting residents in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
Speaking on the Delta incident, the IGP faulted the conduct of the officer accused of shooting a suspect publicly after the suspect had already been arrested and handed over to the police by members of the public.
“Is that what we are taught in the academy? Is that what they taught us in college?” Disu queried.
“How did you feel after that policeman disgraced all of us? You felt bad about it. You felt it was difficult for you to put on your uniform after that,” he added.
The IGP disclosed that the officer linked to the incident had been recommended for dismissal from the Force, adding that the Police Service Commission had already approved the recommendation.
He further stated that the case had been forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions for necessary legal action.
Disu also revealed that police officers recently arrested in Port Harcourt for allegedly using official operational vehicles to extort members of the public had equally been recommended for dismissal from the Nigeria Police Force.
