The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, on Tuesday paid tribute to 17 officers of the Police Mobile Force who lost their lives during a terrorist attack on the Nigerian Army Special Forces School in Buni Yadi, Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State.
The officers were honoured during a memorial parade held at the Force Headquarters in. Abuja on May 19, 2026.
Speaking at the ceremony, the IGP described the slain officers as brave and patriotic men who died while defending the nation and protecting the lives of Nigerians.
According to him, the officers paid the ultimate sacrifice during the attack carried out in the early hours of May 8, 2026.
“Today, we gather with heavy hearts but with immense pride to honour seventeen gallant officers of the Police Mobile Force who paid the supreme price in service to our dear nation during the terrorist attack on the Nigerian Army Special Forces School, Buni Yadi, Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State, in the early hours of 8th May, 2026,” Disu said.
The police chief noted that the sacrifice of the fallen personnel reflected the highest level of commitment, patriotism and dedication to national service.
He stated that the Nigeria Police Force, especially the Police Mobile Force, continues to deploy hundreds of personnel across the North-East in joint security operations alongside the military and other security agencies to combat terrorism and violent extremism.
Disu acknowledged the difficult and dangerous conditions under which officers operate daily to ensure the safety of citizens across the country.
“Our officers continue to put their lives on the line, often under extremely difficult conditions, so that every Nigerian family can sleep at night with a measure of safety and peace,” he stated.
The IGP said the nation must continue to recognise the sacrifices made by security personnel, stressing that behind every fallen officer is a grieving family and an unfulfilled future.
“We want every Nigerian to feel, and to know in their hearts, that there are men and women in uniform who wake up every morning with one purpose: to serve, to protect, and if called upon, to give everything,” he said.
He assured the families of the deceased officers that the police force would continue to stand by them during the difficult period.
“Their sacrifices will never be forgotten, and we solemnly pledge that their deaths will not be in vain. The Nigeria Police Force will not waver. We will continue to show up, to stand firm, and to give our very best in service to this great nation,” Disu added.
The ceremony ended with prayers for the fallen officers and other security personnel currently serving in different operations across the country.
