WORKERS’ DAY: GOVERNORS SALUTE NIGERIAN WORKERS, REAFFIRM COMMITMENT TO WELFARE

Across Nigeria and around the world, workers are commemorating this year’s Workers’ Day, as state governors paid tribute to their role in driving economic growth and national development.

Observed annually on May 1, International Workers’ Day honours the contributions of workers and the global labour movement. To mark the 2026 celebration, the Federal Government declared Friday a public holiday.

In Rivers State, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, in his goodwill message, praised the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the Trade Union Congress (TUC), and their affiliate unions for embracing dialogue in resolving industrial disputes rather than resorting to confrontation.

He noted that this approach has helped sustain industrial peace across the state and encouraged labour leaders to maintain the culture of engagement to keep relations stable and progressive.

The governor also revealed that the ongoing rehabilitation of the State Secretariat Complex is expected to enhance the working environment, leading to improved efficiency and productivity.

Fubara further acknowledged the resilience of civil servants, stating that they have remained steady over the past 35 months despite political challenges, assuring that their sacrifices would not go unnoticed.

In Katsina State, Governor Dikko Radda reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to improving workers’ welfare and the wellbeing of citizens.

Speaking at the 2026 May Day event held at Muhammadu Dikko Stadium in Katsina, themed “Insecurity, Poverty – Bane of Decent Work,” the governor admitted that economic difficulties persist nationwide but stressed that his government has adopted deliberate and strategic measures to support workers.

He disclosed that thousands of workers have been employed in key sectors such as education and healthcare to strengthen service delivery while also addressing unemployment.

Radda called on workers to complement government efforts by contributing meaningfully to the state’s growth, noting that a committed and motivated workforce is critical to sustainable development.

Meanwhile, Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia joined others in celebrating workers, describing the occasion as a moment to recognise their value and contributions to governance and development.

He emphasised that workers remain central to the implementation of his administration’s seven-point development agenda, SACHIIP, which focuses on security, agriculture, commerce, human capital development, infrastructure, ICT, and governance.

According to him, improving workers’ welfare remains key to boosting performance, as he pledged continued support through policies that enhance capacity and productivity.

Alia also commended labour unions in the state for their cooperation, noting that their support has contributed significantly to increased productivity. He concluded by wishing workers across the state a fulfilling and memorable celebration.
