The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has condemned the killing of social media commentator Ibrahim Khalil Dan Shagamu in Kano State.
Obi described the incident as deeply disturbing and called on the Kano State Government and relevant security agencies to conduct a transparent and comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the killing.
In a post on his official X handle on Friday, the former Anambra State governor urged authorities to identify those responsible and ensure that they face justice.
Obi said the right to freedom of expression guaranteed by the Nigerian Constitution must be protected, regardless of political, social or personal differences.
“I am deeply saddened by the killing of social media commentator, Ibrahim Khalil Dan Shagamu, in his home in Kano,” Obi said.
He stressed that disagreements, criticism or disputes could not justify taking another person’s life.
“No disagreement, criticism, or neighbourhood dispute can ever justify the taking of a human life,” he said.
Obi added that people should be able to express their opinions or hold views different from others without living under fear of violence.
“Those who speak up, express their opinions, or hold different views must not be made to live in fear,” he stated.

The NDC candidate extended his condolences to Dan Shagamu’s family, friends, colleagues and followers, while praying for strength for those affected by the death.
“My heartfelt condolences go to his family, friends, colleagues, and followers. May Almighty God grant him eternal rest and give his loved ones the strength and comfort to bear this painful loss,” Obi said.
His comments came amid calls for authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding the commentator’s death and bring those responsible to justice.
