The derailment occurred on Monday, June 8, 2026, causing the death of four and leaving many other passengers injured, prompting the deployment of an NSIB investigation team led by the Director General, Captain Alex Badeh Jr.
The team visited the accident scene alongside the Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Kayode Opeifa, and the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Transportation, Engr. Funsho Adebiyi, as part of a coordinated response involving key transportation stakeholders.
In a statement by the bureau’s Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance, Funke Adebayo-Arowojobe, investigators documented the accident site, inspected affected rail infrastructure and equipment, collected operational and technical data, and interviewed personnel connected to the train’s operations.
The NSIB said evidence recovered from witness accounts, operational records, maintenance documents, and other sources would undergo detailed analysis by specialists as the investigation progresses.
Speaking at the scene, Captain Badeh Jr. extended condolences to families of victims and all passengers affected by the incident.
Upon completion of the investigation process, the Bureau is expected to publish its findings and issue safety recommendations aimed at strengthening rail transport safety and reducing the likelihood of future occurrences.
