Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago has called on religious leaders to prioritize preaching peace and unity, while advising them to remain neutral in political matters.
Governor Bago made the appeal while receiving a delegation from the Niger State Imams Forum and other Islamic organizations at the Government House. The religious leaders were on a condolence visit to commiserate with the government and people of the state over the tragic deaths of 37 artisanal miners.
While expressing gratitude for their support, the governor urged the clerics to use their platforms to foster national cohesion and help curb societal vices. He specifically cautioned them to steer clear of partisan politics and instead focus on their roles as spiritual guides and advocates for harmony.
“Stay clear of politics, but rather stick to being advocates of peace and do your best in curtailing societal ills,” the governor stated. He also appealed to the religious leaders to sustain prayers for the state and the nation, especially as the region continues to navigate security challenges.
Speaking on behalf of the delegation, Malam Umar Faruk Abdullahi, Director General of the Bureau for Religious Affairs, described the mining disaster as a devastating loss for the state. He encouraged the governor to remain steadfast in his faith, viewing the tragedy as a passing test.
The visit concluded with a special prayer session for the souls of the deceased miners, as well as for the peace, security, and prosperity of Niger State and Nigeria, led by the Chief Imam of Minna, Malam Jibril Isah.
