A coalition of civil society organizations has called for an impartial, evidence-based investigation into Senator Shehu Buba Umar, representing Bauchi South, over alleged links to banditry financing and sponsorship.
In a statement issued Wednesday by spokesperson Adedeji Abdulsalam, the Coalition of Civil Society Organisations for Good warned that delays in investigating the allegations pose a risk to both the senator’s reputation and national security, stressing that the matter must be addressed through legal institutions rather than social media debates.
“Nigeria’s security crisis is too serious to permit either political protection or trial by social media,” Abdulsalam stated. “Where credible evidence exists that any individual is financing, facilitating, arming, training, harboring, or materially supporting bandit groups, the person should be investigated and prosecuted where a case is established.”
The coalition urged relevant security agencies to independently verify all claims while ensuring the lawmaker is afforded due process and expected to cooperate fully. Furthermore, the group emphasized that individuals who deliberately fabricate false accusations should also face legal accountability.
Cautioning against polarizing the issue, the organization urged Nigerians to avoid framing the investigation along ethnic, religious, or political lines.
