FirstPower Electricity Distribution Company Limited has confirmed the arrest of two suspects in connection with the vandalism of a power transformer at the Urunkpuke Distribution Substation in Nimo, Njikoka Local Government Area, Anambra State.
The suspects, identified as Nonso Okolodile and Emeka Onyeugwo, were apprehended by the local vigilante group following a tip-off from the company’s Feeder Manager.
According to FirstPower’s Head of Communications, Izunna Okafor, the suspects were initially handed over to the Nimo Divisional Police Station for preliminary inquiry. Arrangements are underway to transfer the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka for a discreet and comprehensive investigation.
Security operatives and local guards recovered tools utilized by the vandals alongside vital parts of the damaged equipment from the scene. The utility firm praised the Nimo Vigilante Group for its swift action and cooperation in safeguarding critical power assets.
The company highlighted that infrastructure vandalism severely disrupts electricity supply to communities while imposing heavy financial burdens on the distribution network.
This incident follows a recent warning by FirstPower regarding a surge in criminal activity across its network. The firm has recorded at least 73 major cases of power infrastructure vandalism across Anambra State.
Management has urged residents, community leaders, and local stakeholders to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities around transformers, lines, and substations.
FirstPower reiterated its commitment to collaborating with law enforcement agencies and community security networks to prosecute offenders and restore stable electricity to affected customers.
