Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has announced that the decision to accept a ceasefire with the United States was reached unanimously by top officials and received full approval from the supreme leader.
According to a report by The Times of Israel on April 9, 2026, in his recent statement shared via the Telegram messaging app, he explained that the ceasefire does not represent any form of weakness on Iran’s part.
Instead, he described it as a strategic move designed to solidify Iran’s proud victories achieved during the conflict.
Pezeshkian emphasized that the pause in fighting came only after more than a month of remarkable Iranian public resilience and unwavering support from the population, which demonstrated the nation’s strength and unity throughout the challenging period.
The president highlighted how the collective resolve of both the leadership and the people played a crucial role in shaping this outcome.
He noted that Iranian citizens had shown exceptional endurance and dedication, standing firm in the face of adversity.
This widespread backing, according to Pezeshkian, allowed the country to navigate the difficult circumstances with dignity and determination.
By framing the ceasefire in this manner, the president aimed to reinforce national pride while acknowledging the sacrifices made by ordinary Iranians.
His words sought to unify the public behind the leadership’s choices and to present the agreement as a continuation of Iran’s successful defense rather than a retreat.
Meanwhile, questions continue to surround the current status of the new Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei.
He has not appeared in public since assuming the role following the killing of his father, the former supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, which occurred at the beginning of the war in February.
