A former spokesperson for the 2019 presidential campaign of Atiku Abubakar, Segun Sowunmi, has spoken on his role during the election period, expressing his views on campaign strategy and leadership decisions.
Sowunmi made the remarks during an interview on The Volume Podcast aired on Saturday, April 11, 2026, where he reflected on his involvement in the campaign and his relationship with the former presidential candidate.
In his statement, he said, “Never mind the fact that some other people were basically jumping around, joking with narrative. I was still a spokesperson, and I still believe very strongly that Atiku Abubakar is a man I really like.”
He further clarified his stance, adding, “I don’t pretend about my loving him.” However, Sowunmi expressed reservations about how the campaign was managed, stating, “I just don’t want to be disappointed and frustrated with his attitude to his own contest.”
He suggested that a different approach to campaign coordination could have influenced the outcome of the election. According to him, “If he had really listened and allowed me to drive the effort, the way it ought to be driven, I would reasonably say the election would have been over by now.”
Sowunmi highlighted his approach to political strategy, emphasising detailed planning and preparation. He said, “I’m someone who likes long plans, and I pay attention to every little detail about planning.”
He also noted his method of assessing political opponents, stating, “There’s nothing about my opponent that I underestimate.” Expanding on this, he added, “Everything an opponent can bring, and even what he doesn’t have, I will concede to him and plan against it.”.......…
