Zimbabwean Billionaire Wicknell Chivayo and His Wife Lucy Muteke Among 6 Killed in Tragic Helicopter Crash

Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo and his wife, Lucy Muteke, have died in a helicopter crash in Marondera, Zimbabwe.

Chivayo’s family spokesperson, Herbert Chivayo, confirmed the deaths to Zimbabwe’s state broadcaster ZBC News, saying the family was devastated by the tragedy.

The helicopter crashed in the Marondera Rural area, about 70 kilometres east of Harare, at around 5 p.m. on Wednesday, September 30.

Police initially reported that six people were on board the aircraft. Government spokesperson Nick Mangwana later said the helicopter was carrying a high-profile businessman, four other passengers and two pilots, with no survivors.

Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said authorities were working to identify the victims following the crash, as the aircraft caught fire.

Chivayo was one of Zimbabwe’s best-known businessmen and was widely recognised for his lavish lifestyle, expensive vehicles and high-profile relationships with prominent African figures.

He also had major business interests in sectors including energy and infrastructure. His business dealings, including government contracts, had previously attracted public and official scrutiny. Chivayo denied wrongdoing in relation to the accusations surrounding his business activities.

The businessman frequently shared his luxurious lifestyle and interactions with prominent African leaders on social media, making him a well-known figure across the continent.
