Nnayerugo told the court that on the night of July 11, 2023, he had a lengthy conversation with Augusta that continued into the following morning. During the discussion, he said she told him she was no longer interested in continuing their relationship.
He also told the court that he felt used after reflecting on the money and gifts he had spent on her during their relationship. These included a trip to Seychelles in 2022, her university fees in January 2023, and what he described as about ₦20 million spent on diamonds, an iPhone, AirPods and a private lounge for her birthday celebration in February 2023.
“I started listing out all I had done for her since she said she had since checked out from the relationship,” he told the court.
He further testified that on July 12, 2023, he eventually agreed to meet Augusta at his residence after receiving a message from her mother concerning the man she had reportedly planned to meet.
According to Nnayerugo, the message indicated that Augusta had known the man before she began dating him. He said he interpreted this as a sign that her mother supported her decision to end their relationship.
Nnayerugo told the court that Augusta later joined him in his bedroom, where they smoked marijuana, ate and slept separately.
He said that the following morning, he became determined to access her phone after an earlier attempt to read her WhatsApp messages failed because she had changed her password.
According to his account, he pretended to have a cough and asked Augusta to bring him water from the refrigerator. He said he then took her phone as she turned away.
He claimed Augusta immediately rushed back and demanded that he return the device. While holding the phone in one hand and attempting to keep her away with the other, he said he began checking her messages.
Nnayerugo testified that he found conversations between Augusta and her mother that he interpreted as showing that her mother had advised her on what to tell him about the relationship and encouraged her to leave him.
He said he became angry and called Augusta’s mother a fake pastor, prompting an angry reaction from Augusta.
According to his testimony, Augusta picked up a knife from a table and threatened to stab him if he did not return her phone. He claimed she stabbed him in both hands but said he continued holding on to the device because he wanted her to return it along with other gifts he had purchased for her.
He further told the court that Augusta threatened to stab him in the chest and kill him for insulting her mother. He said he managed to take the knife from her during the ensuing struggle.
Describing the confrontation, Nnayerugo said they struggled over the knife for about 10 minutes, with Augusta holding the handle while he held the blade.
“We dragged the knife for about 10mins, she was holding on to the handle while I held the tip,” he told the court.
