Tambuwal, Dasuki demand more security support for Sokoto

Former Sokoto State Governor and Senator representing Sokoto South, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, and the member representing Kebbe/Tambuwal Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Abdussamad Dasuki, have appealed to the Federal Government to urgently strengthen security operations in communities affected by insecurity in Sokoto State.

The lawmakers made the appeal during a meeting with the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (retd.), where they raised concerns over the deteriorating security situation in Kebbe Local Government Area and Kaya community in Tambuwal Local Government Area.

Tambuwal disclosed the meeting in a statement posted on his X account on Thursday, saying the delegation presented the concerns of residents directly to the Defence Minister.

He said the delegation requested increased deployment of security personnel, additional operational equipment and sustained military action to protect lives and property.

“We conveyed the concerns of our people and stressed the urgent need for increased security presence, additional operational resources and sustained action to protect lives and property, and enable our people to pursue their livelihoods without fear,” Tambuwal said.

According to him, the security situation has continued to cause fear among residents and disrupt their ability to engage in farming and other economic activities.

Tambuwal said the Defence Minister assured the delegation that the Federal Government remained committed to tackling insecurity in the affected areas and promised additional resources and operational support for security agencies.

The former governor, however, said the assurances must be followed by immediate action on the ground.

“We appreciate these assurances and look forward to their swift translation into action on the ground,” he said.

The meeting comes amid renewed security concerns in parts of southern Sokoto, particularly Kebbe Local Government Area, where communities have recently witnessed attacks attributed to suspected Lakurawa militants.

Several residents have reportedly been killed or displaced following attacks in the area, while fears of further attacks have affected farming and other livelihood activities.

The recent violence has also triggered calls for increased military presence and improved logistics for security personnel operating in remote communities.

Tambuwal said he would continue to engage the relevant authorities and pursue interventions aimed at restoring peace to affected communities.

“The security and wellbeing of our people remain paramount. We will continue to engage all relevant authorities and pursue every necessary intervention until lasting peace and security are restored to our communities,” he said.

The delegation’s visit is expected to further strengthen calls for increased deployment of troops and other security resources to vulnerable communities across Sokoto State.
