SOWORE REMANDED IN KUJE PRISON AFTER BAIL REVOCATION

Justice Mohammed Umar gave the order after Sowore appeared before the court on Monday.

The activist and publisher arrived at the court premises carrying a packed bag and later told journalists that he had anticipated the court would order his detention.

Sowore was accompanied by members of his group, some of whom carried placards in support of him as proceedings commenced.

The court had earlier, on June 16, withdrawn the bail previously granted to him after he failed to appear for his scheduled trial.

In a ruling delivered on an oral application by counsel to the Department of State Services, Akinkolu Kehinde (SAN), Justice Umar also issued a bench warrant directing that Sowore be arrested.

Sowore is being prosecuted by the DSS over allegations that he made defamatory and false claims against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The charges stem from comments he allegedly posted on his X and Facebook accounts in which he referred to the President as “a criminal.”

The case is expected to continue as the court proceeds with hearing the charges brought against the AAC leader.
