NPF EXTRADITES CHINESE PONZI SUSPECT OVER $245M FRAUD CASE

The Nigeria Police Force, through the INTERPOL National Central Bureau (NCB), Abuja, has arrested and repatriated a Chinese national, Xu Qing, to the People’s Republic of China over his alleged involvement in a large-scale Ponzi-style financial fraud involving illegal mobilisation of public deposits.

This was revealed in a statement issued on 6 May 2026 by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid.

The suspect was handed over to Chinese authorities following an official request after he was declared wanted in Beijing in connection with an alleged financial scam estimated at about $245 million.

Investigations showed that Xu Qing fled China to Nigeria on 5 November 2024 in an attempt to evade arrest. A warrant for his arrest was subsequently issued on 12 November 2025 by the Shinan Sub-Bureau of Qingdao Public Security.

Acting on intelligence-led operations and sustained surveillance, operatives of INTERPOL NCB Abuja traced and arrested the fugitive on 24 April 2026 at a factory located in Olowotedo, Siun Village, Obafemi Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State. He was thereafter repatriated to China on 28 April 2026 through coordinated bilateral police cooperation arrangements to face prosecution.

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to strengthening international cooperation in the fight against transnational organised crime, stressing that Nigeria will not serve as a safe haven for fugitives.

He further advised individuals and corporate organisations in the country to conduct thorough due diligence, including background checks through relevant security agencies, before engaging foreign nationals in business or employment relationships.

In his remarks, DCP Anthony Okon Placid noted that the successful operation underscores the growing effectiveness of international policing collaboration and the Force’s resolve to track, arrest, and repatriate fugitives regardless of attempts to evade justice.

The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its commitment to combating transnational crime and strengthening global partnerships to ensure accountability and justice across borders.
