The Senate on Thursday approved the 2026 budget proposal for the Federal Capital Territory totaling ₦2.2 trillion, with about ₦1.7 trillion, representing 76 per cent of the allocation, dedicated to capital projects.
The appropriation bill was passed after it scaled third reading during plenary following the presentation and adoption of the report submitted by the Senate Committee on the FCT on the 2026 FCT Appropriation Bill.
Despite receiving overwhelming support from lawmakers, concerns were raised over the revenue structure backing the proposed budget.
Sani Musa and the Senate Chief Whip called for a comprehensive breakdown of the FCT’s projected revenue profile as well as clarification on the sources expected to fund the expenditure plan.
The lawmakers maintained that greater disclosure of the revenue framework would strengthen transparency and improve accountability in the management of public resources.
In his remarks, Senate President Godswill Akpabio supported the concerns expressed by the lawmakers, stressing the need for accountability in the execution and implementation of the budget.
