Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has formally declared his intention to contest for the Bauchi South Senatorial seat on the platform of the Allied Peoples Movement ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The governor obtained his nomination form on Thursday in Abuja shortly after attending his first National Executive Committee meeting of the APM.
The NEC session was chaired by the party’s National Chairman, Yusuf Dantalle, alongside other top officials and stakeholders of the party.
Addressing members during the meeting, the Bauchi governor criticised what he described as growing political intimidation and undemocratic tendencies within Nigeria’s political environment, arguing that such developments have made it increasingly difficult for progressive politicians and political groups to thrive.
According to him, the ideals of the APM closely reflect his political beliefs, especially in the areas of accountability, justice, inclusiveness, internal democracy, and adherence to the rule of law, which he said influenced his decision to align with the party.
The governor further disclosed that several prominent members of the Peoples Democratic Party moved with him to the APM, including lawmakers from the National Assembly and the Bauchi State House of Assembly, commissioners, local government chairmen, ward executives, party leaders, and numerous grassroots supporters.
He said the move should not be seen as a personal defection alone, but rather a broad political realignment aimed at strengthening the APM and widening its national presence.
Mohammed’s Senate ambition comes only days after he officially dumped the PDP, explaining that his decision was driven by the need to provide better representation for his constituents.
Before leaving the PDP, the governor served as chairman of the party’s Governors’ Forum.
The Bauchi governor previously represented Bauchi South Senatorial District in the Senate after securing victory in the 2007 election under the platform of the All Nigeria Peoples Party before later serving as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory in 2010.
