A married Nigerian lady has cried out online over her husband’s alleged decision to rent a leaking apartment for her mother, sparking a disagreement between him and her brothers.
The young woman’s story was shared by Facebook user Obongawan Janet Afia, who allegedly received it as an inbox message.
‘The House He Rented for My Mom Is So Shameful’
The woman explained that her husband, despite struggling financially, rented a house for her mother.
However, she claimed that the apartment was in poor condition and later began leaking.
“I know he’s a struggling man but the house he rented for my mom is so sh@m€ful. I can’t even boast that my husband rented a house for my mom. To make matters worse the house is leaking,” she wrote.
She explained that her elder brother initially asked his son to stay with their mother after learning that her husband had rented a house for her.
When the nephew discovered the leaking roof, he reportedly informed his father, who then contacted the woman to question why such an apartment had been rented for their mother.
The woman said she explained that the landlord had planned to renovate the property but they had needed the house urgently, so they paid and agreed to wait for the renovation.
‘My Brother Called My Husband’
According to the woman, her elder brother also contacted her husband, who reportedly assured him that the landlord would work on the property.
She said the situation made her feel embarrassed, especially after her sister reminded her of how her own husband had previously bought a motorcycle for their mother and allegedly ensured that he bought the best.
“I now feel left out like I intentionally told my husband to rent such a place for my mom,” she wrote.
The woman said her mother was later moved to her immediate younger brother’s house while work was carried out on the apartment.
However, after the repairs, her elder brother reportedly visited the property and still felt that it was not suitable for their mother.
‘Is My Mom Your Mom?’
The woman claimed that her elder brother contacted her husband again, but the conversation reportedly became heated.
She alleged that her husband questioned why her brother was concerned about the condition of the apartment and asked whether their mother was also his mother.
“My husband got @ngry and asked my brother a very s€ns€less question, he asked him if my mom is his mom? If my brother has ever given his mom anything? If my brother even knows the way to his mother’s house?” she wrote.
She said she tried to take the phone from her husband but he continued speaking to her brother and allegedly insulting him.
The woman explained that she felt her brother’s concerns were understandable because the apartment allegedly had no security or gate, while the outside was not painted.
She also claimed that although the rooms were tiled, the kitchen was not, while the toilet and bathroom were combined in one room.
‘He Just Rented Anything’
The woman said she had earlier asked her husband to ensure that the toilet and bathroom were separated because her mother was elderly and needed a comfortable place to bathe.
“But my husband just rented anything just because it’s his money,” she stated.
She claimed that she later asked her husband whether he would have rented the same apartment if the woman was his own mother.
“I asked him a simple question, if this woman was your mom would you have rented such a place for her? He didn’t answer me because he knows the answer,” she wrote.
The disagreement reportedly escalated further when her elder brother visited the couple’s home and challenged her husband to repeat what he had said during their phone conversation.
The husband reportedly repeated the comments and allegedly said even more to her brothers.
‘Marriage Has Sold My Birthright’
The family reportedly later agreed that the husband should pay for the remaining repairs because he was the one who rented the apartment.
However, the woman claimed that he refused and told her and her brothers to handle the cost themselves.
She said the materials and labour were expected to cost ₦75,000 in total, comprising ₦55,000 for zinc and ₦20,000 for labour.
“My husband refused to pay and said I and my brothers should pay,” she wrote.
The situation reportedly left the woman questioning whether her husband’s actions were appropriate, particularly because she is the first daughter in her family and feels responsible for her mother.
“Does this speak well of him as someone who married an ada?” she asked.
“The shame is too much. I can’t even have a say anymore as the first daughter. Marriage has s0ld my birthright.”
