Kogi Man Arrested for Setting Wife Ablaze Over Burnt Clothes

The Kogi State Police Command has apprehended 33-year-old Jacob Irewa for allegedly dousing his wife with petrol and setting her on fire following a domestic altercation in Lokoja.

The incident occurred on Friday at Oworo Estate, Felele, according to police spokesperson ASP Afusat Saliu. The victim, Berida Irawo, sustained severe injuries and is currently receiving treatment at Honey Gold Hospital, Felele.

Officers from the B Division Surveillance Team responded to a distress call and arrested the suspect at the scene, Ms Saliu confirmed in a statement on Sunday.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the dispute escalated after Mrs Irawo burned some of her husband’s clothing without his consent. The confrontation intensified when the suspect allegedly threatened his wife, siphoned petrol from his motorcycle, and proceeded to set her ablaze. During questioning, Mr Irewa reportedly admitted to the act.

Commissioner of Police Naziru Kankarofi condemned the attack as “barbaric and unacceptable,” reiterating the command’s zero-tolerance stance on domestic violence. “The command will not condone any action capable of endangering lives,” he stated, urging residents to resolve disputes through lawful channels.

The suspect will face charges of attempted culpable homicide upon conclusion of the investigation. The police command has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property, encouraging prompt reporting of domestic abuse cases to prevent further escalation.
