Fear and grief have gripped Binnari village in Karim Lamido Local Government Area of Taraba State following a deadly attack by suspected bandits in the early hours of Friday, October 23, 2026.
The Taraba State Police Command has confirmed the recovery of 10 bodies from the community. Residents, however, put the death toll at 26, including children, after additional bodies were recovered on Saturday morning. Several families have been left devastated, with houses burned, food supplies destroyed and some residents displaced.
The attack took place in Binnari, within Karim II Constituency. Local sources said the assailants invaded the community, killing residents and setting houses ablaze. Some people were initially reported missing as search and recovery efforts continued. Residents expressed concern that the casualty figure could rise further as more information emerges about those still unaccounted for.
According to community accounts, the attackers were suspected to have crossed into the area from neighbouring Plateau State, though this claim has not been independently verified. The reported deaths of children have deepened the sorrow among affected families and intensified calls for urgent security intervention.
Beyond the loss of lives, the assault caused significant damage to property. Houses were set on fire and foodstuffs destroyed, forcing some residents to flee their homes for safety. The destruction of food supplies has raised immediate welfare concerns for families who have lost relatives, homes and their means of livelihood.
The circumstances surrounding the attack, the identities of those responsible and the full extent of the destruction remain under assessment. The incident has renewed appeals for stronger security measures to protect vulnerable communities in Karim Lamido and other parts of Taraba State.
Taraba State Police Public Relations Officer ASP Victor Mshelizah confirmed the report.
