ECN Awards N1bn Solar Mini-Grid Project to FUD

The Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) has awarded a N1 billion solar mini-grid project to the Federal University Dutse (FUD) in Jigawa State to improve electricity supply on the campus.

The project, awarded under the Renewed Hope Solarization Agenda for Alternative Energy, involves the provision and installation of a 500-kilowatt (0.5MW) solar mini-grid.

According to a statement issued on Wednesday by the university’s Director of Public Affairs, Malam Abdullahi Bello, the project is expected to commence soon and be completed within three months.

The development is part of efforts to provide the university with a more reliable alternative source of electricity and reduce its dependence on conventional power supplies.

The ECN has also approved the installation of 100 solar-powered streetlights at the university, with 50 already ready for installation.

FUD Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ahmad Mohammed Gumel, expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and ECN Director-General, Dr Mustapha Abdullahi, for supporting the university’s renewable energy initiatives.

Gumel also said the commission was prepared to collaborate with the university on renewable energy research, according to the statement.
