BREAKING: Yunusa Tanko Resigns As Obidient Movement National Coordinator Ahead Of 2027 Elections
Yunusa Tanko, a prominent ally of Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi, has resigned as the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement.
Tanko stepped down from the position following his appointment as Political Adviser on Northern Nigeria to Obi ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He announced his resignation and new appointment in a statement shared on his 𝕏 account on Wednesday.
According to Tanko, his new role will focus on political engagement, mobilisation and coordination across Northern Nigeria as preparations for the 2027 presidential election intensify.
“With deep gratitude and a renewed sense of purpose, I write to formally accept my new assignment as Political Adviser, Northern Nigeria, to His Excellency, Mr Peter Obi,” Tanko said.
He expressed appreciation to Obi for the confidence reposed in him, stressing that Northern Nigeria would remain important to the political project ahead of the 2027 elections.
Tanko said he would work with political structures, stakeholders, communities and supporters across the region to deepen engagement, strengthen Obi’s presence and expand the movement’s support base.
He also thanked leaders, volunteers, coordinators and supporters of the Obidient Movement for their contributions during his time as national coordinator.
“I sincerely thank His Excellency, Mr Peter Obi, for his trust and leadership. I also appreciate every leader, volunteer, coordinator, supporter and ordinary Nigerian who has worked with me over these two years,” he said.
Tanko served as National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement for about two years before stepping down. Despite leaving the coordination role, he said he would continue working toward Obi’s 2027 presidential bid, particularly through political engagement and mobilisation in Northern Nigeria.
His new assignment comes as political parties, candidates and support groups intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections, with efforts increasingly focused on strengthening grassroots structures and expanding political support across the country.
