The Presidency has dismissed criticisms from Peter Obi regarding President Bola Tinubu’s absence from the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, accusing the opposition figure of feigning ignorance.
Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to the President, issued the response after Obi publicly questioned the President’s whereabouts and his consecutive absences from the global summit.
Onanuga defended the President’s schedule, noting that other prominent African heads of state including South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa and Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi also skipped this year’s UNGA without triggering domestic political crises.
“The Nigerian President said he would take his yearly break and asked his capable and trustworthy Vice President to attend to official duties in his place,” Onanuga stated via social media, criticizing Obi for raising questions that echo online criticisms from his supporters.
Vice President Kashim Shettima represented Nigeria at the high-level UN gathering in New York.
Meanwhile, the Presidency confirmed that President Tinubu is scheduled to return to Nigeria from France. His arrival precedes national celebrations for Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary, with plans to spend time in Lagos before returning to Abuja.
