Vice President Kashim Shettima has returned to Nigeria following a high-level diplomatic mission in New York, where he led the country’s delegation to the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly.
Shettima departed Abuja on September 20 with the mandate to represent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the annual global summit.
During the General Debate, the Vice President delivered Nigeria’s National Statement, reiterating the nation’s call for comprehensive UN Security Council reforms, including permanent African representation, equitable global financial structures, enhanced climate support, and stronger multilateral cooperation.
In addition to his address at the UN podium, Shettima maintained a packed schedule of bilateral meetings and strategic engagements. He participated in the Third High-Level Roundtable of the Africa Minerals Strategy Group, emphasizing President Tinubu’s push for African nations to transition from raw mineral exports toward domestic processing and value addition.
At a dedicated education financing event co-hosted by Nigeria and Italy, Shettima underscored education as a cornerstone of human capital development, while endorsing the Global Partnership for Education’s $5 billion funding campaign.
The Vice President also engaged with members of the Nigerian diaspora, encouraging them to leverage their expertise and investments to drive national growth. His itinerary included strategic consultations with UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed and the leadership of the ECOWAS Commission.
Throughout the summit, Shettima advanced Nigeria’s core positions on regional stability, sustainable economic cooperation, and the urgent need for a more equitable global order.
