The Trade Union Congress (TUC), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, has directed workers in the FCT to disregard the indefinite strike declared by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), FCT Council.
The NLC FCT Council, in a communique dated October 6, 2026, had directed all workers in the FCT, both public and private, to begin an indefinite strike from Wednesday, October 7, 2026, over the dispute between the FCT Administration (FCTA) and the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT).
But in a counter-directive, the TUC FCT Council said it was not part of the decision.
In a statement, the TUC said the NLC directive was issued without any consultation with the TUC FCT Council or any of its affiliates.
“We took no part in the meeting that produced it, and we did not take part in the decision to call a strike. Accordingly, the TUC FCT is not a party to the said industrial action,” the statement said.
The TUC added that issues, especially those concerning children and the welfare of workers, should be approached proactively and with effective strategies.
The TUC directed all its affiliate unions and members in the FCT to go about their normal duties and report to work as usual.
“Members should not be intimidated or coerced into joining any action that the TUC has not sanctioned. Any such incident should be reported to the TUC FCT Secretariat without delay.
“Affiliate leaders should disregard any directive to set up ‘enforcement committees’ that does not come from the TUC FCT.
“Members should remain calm, law-abiding and vigilant. Further guidance will come only from the TUC FCT leadership if the situation changes,” it said.
The TUC said it remains concerned about the welfare of children, teachers and all workers in the FCT, adding that such matters are best resolved through proper consultation and established channels of industrial relations.
It said it remains open to dialogue to ensure that children’s access to education is not disrupted.
