According to report by PUNCH on Tuesday March 24, 2026, a respected Islamic cleric in Kaduna, Sheikh Ahmad Umar, has spoken out to dismiss rumors that he was arrested after hosting former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
The confusion started when Obi posted online that Umar had been taken into custody shortly after their meeting. Obi described the situation as a worrying sign that Nigeria’s democratic space is shrinking. His statement quickly spread and caused concern among many Nigerians.
Hours later, Umar released a video message to set the record straight. He explained that he was never arrested or detained. Instead, he was only invited by security officials for questioning. He said he cooperated fully, answered their questions, and was allowed to go home. He stressed that he is safe, free, and in good health.
The cleric also appealed to his followers and the wider public to remain calm. He warned against taking the law into their own hands or creating disorder in the name of loyalty. According to him, the best way to bring about change in Nigeria is through peaceful and democratic means.
Umar encouraged citizens to focus on registering to vote, participating in elections, and choosing better leaders when the time comes. He reminded everyone that progress can only be achieved through lawful processes, not through violence or unrest.
Here’s what Umar said,
“I was not detained by the DSS. I was invited for questioning. I cooperated fully and I was released. I am free. I am safe. And I am well.”
