According to Daily Post, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has renewed its call for the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), insisting that his continued detention represents a collective grievance for the Igbo people.…WATCH THE VIDEO HERE
The group made this demand on Thursday in Enugu, stressing that Kanu’s imprisonment goes beyond an individual case and symbolises a broader injustice affecting the entire Igbo nation. Kanu is currently being held in Sokoto prison following his conviction for treason.
Speaking at the Ohanaeze Imeobi and General Assembly held at the organisation’s National Secretariat in Enugu, the President-General, Chief Senator John Azuta-Mbata, urged the federal government to act decisively on the matter.
He cautioned authorities against listening to individuals who claim to be mobilising Igbo political support, warning that such assurances are misleading as long as Kanu remains in custody.
According to him, “I have told the government that Nnamdi Kanu that is in jail, it is the entire igboland that is there. There’s no igbo man that is happy that Kanu is in incarceration.”
He further appealed to members of the community to be honest in their dealings with the government, adding, “Let our people stop deceiving the federal government.”
Azuta-Mbata reiterated that the release of Kanu remains a top priority for the Igbo people, stating, “We’re calling on the government of Tinubu to release Kanu. This is the minimal demand of ndi Igbo.”
While emphasising this demand, he also acknowledged ongoing discussions around the creation of additional states, describing it as a positive step.
In his words, “Additional state creation is a welcome development. We’re happy that is receiving attention.”
