Goals from Nestory Irankunda and Connor Metcalfe, coupled with an outstanding performance from goalkeeper Patrick Beach, secured a memorable victory for the Socceroos at BC Place Stadium in Vancouver.
Ahead of the match, Popovic raised eyebrows by making several major changes to his starting lineup. Veteran captain and first-choice goalkeeper Maty Ryan was left out, with Beach handed only his third international appearance. Vice-captain Jackson Irvine was also omitted as 21-year-old midfielder Paul Okon-Engstler earned a starting role in a team featuring 10 players making their World Cup debuts.
The coach’s decisions proved decisive as Beach delivered a commanding display between the posts, frustrating a Turkish side that controlled large spells of possession but failed to convert their dominance into goals.
Australia broke the deadlock in the 28th minute through Irankunda. Moments after Beach denied Arda Guler with a sharp save, the goalkeeper quickly launched an attack by finding Okon-Engstler deep inside Australia’s half. The young midfielder responded with a perfectly weighted long pass that split the Turkish defence and released Irankunda. The winger showed composure, taking a brilliant first touch before slotting a low finish beyond the goalkeeper.
Irankunda celebrated the goal by recreating former Australia captain Tim Cahill’s iconic corner-flag boxing celebration.
Turkey, making their first World Cup appearance since finishing third at the 2002 tournament, came close to finding an equaliser shortly afterwards. Abdulkerim Bardakci unleashed a powerful effort from distance, but Beach produced another crucial save, getting a fingertip to the ball and pushing it onto the post.
Despite boasting a squad filled with players competing regularly in Europe’s elite competitions, Turkey struggled to break down Australia’s disciplined defensive setup.
Beach continued his heroics after halftime, notably pushing away a dangerous free-kick from Guler in the 57th minute as Turkey searched desperately for a way back into the contest.
Australia eventually put the result beyond doubt in the 75th minute. Metcalfe collected possession in midfield, surged forward and unleashed a superb strike from 25 yards that found the back of the net to make it 2-0.
The victory leaves Australia level on three points with Group D leaders the United States. The two sides are scheduled to meet in Seattle on Friday in what promises to be a crucial encounter in the race for qualification.
