Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has called on the Nigerian government to take decisive steps to end the killings and attacks that have forced residents of Plateau State into Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps.
Obi made the call on Tuesday while visiting and addressing displaced persons in Plateau State, where he expressed concern over the continued displacement of Nigerians as a result of insecurity.
The former Anambra State governor said the presence of Nigerians in IDP camps was a reflection of the country’s wider security crisis.
“As long as you are in an IDP camp, Nigerians are still in IDP camps. You are not supposed to be here,” Obi told the displaced persons.
He said although prayers remained important, the government had the responsibility to take concrete action to protect citizens and prevent further attacks.
“Yes, we need prayers, but these problems can be solved by the government. The people carrying out these atrocities are not from the moon. The government should deal with them,” he said.

Obi urged the authorities to prioritise the security of communities affected by violence in Plateau State and work towards creating conditions that would enable displaced residents to return to their homes.
He also appealed to other presidential candidates to visit IDP camps across the country and engage directly with Nigerians affected by insecurity.
