The trial of former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, and his two sons, Aminu and Mustapha, over an alleged N1.35 billion fraud, suffered yet another setback on Monday at the Federal High Court, Abuja.
Lamido and his sons are facing prosecution by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) before Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu on a 37‑count charge bordering on alleged money laundering, kickbacks, and fraudulent contract awards said to have occurred during Lamido’s tenure as governor between 2007 and 2015.
At the resumed hearing, EFCC counsel, Chile Okoroma (SAN), informed the court that the defence’s lead counsel, Joe Agi (SAN), was absent due to surgery and had requested an adjournment. While wishing Agi a speedy recovery, Okoroma argued that another member of the defence team should have appeared to avoid further delays in the case, which has been pending since 2015.
He reminded the court that Justice Ojukwu had travelled from her judicial station in Calabar, Cross River State, to preside over the matter in Abuja, stressing that unnecessary postponements must be curtailed. To keep proceedings on track, the prosecution requested only a one‑day adjournment.
Justice Ojukwu granted the request and adjourned the trial until Tuesday, July 21, 2026, for continuation.
