JUST IN: Nigeria beat Japan to become first African nation to win U-17 Women’s World Cup

Nigeria’s Flamingos made history on Saturday night as the team defeated Japan 2-1 in final to win the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup and bring the trophy to Africa for the first time.

The Nigerian youngsters delivered when it mattered most, scoring twice before holding off a late Japanese fightback to secure a historic victory at the Mohammed VI Football Complex.

Awawu Bashiru opened the scoring in the 39th minute, giving Nigeria a deserved advantage just before the break.

The Flamingos returned for the second half with the same attacking intent, and their pressure paid off when Oluebube Umejiaku doubled the lead in the 47th minute.

With a two-goal cushion, Nigeria appeared firmly in control. However, Japan refused to surrender without a fight. Fuki Ito reduced the deficit in the 80th minute, setting up a tense closing period as the Japanese pushed forward in search of an equaliser.

Nigeria defended resolutely through the closing minutes, protecting their advantage until the final whistle confirmed a victory that will be remembered for generations.

The Flamingos have become the first African nation to win the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, while Nigeria has now achieved the distinction of winning the men’s and women’s versions of the FIFA U-17 World Cup.

Perhaps even more remarkable is the manner in which the team reached the summit.
