REPS SUMMON DEFENCE MINISTER, SERVICE CHIEFS OVER SECURITY FUNDING

Also expected before the lawmakers are the Minister of Finance, Taiwo Oyedele, and the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Mohammed Mohammed, to provide further clarification on security-related financial disbursements.

In its resolution, the Green Chamber also called on President Bola Tinubu to expand the recruitment of forest guards across states currently facing security challenges, following the model already implemented in Oyo State.

The decision was taken during plenary on Tuesday after lawmakers considered a series of motions on the worsening security situation across the country.

The resolutions come against the backdrop of renewed insecurity in several regions.

Last month, terrorists abducted over 40 pupils and teachers from schools in Oyo State. In a separate incident in Borno State, scores of students and teachers were also kidnapped, triggering widespread concern nationwide.

Following the incidents, the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) staged nationwide protests, demanding the immediate release of all abducted victims. Several civil society groups also joined in calling for urgent government action.

In response to the Oyo attack, President Bola Tinubu dispatched a high-level delegation comprising his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila; the Inspector-General of Police; and the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, among other senior officials, to the affected community.

During engagements with stakeholders in the area, Gbajabiamila said Tinubu is disturbed about the incident. He added that the President’s decision to send top security officials demonstrated his commitment to deploying all available resources to secure the release of the victims.

The President has also approved the recruitment of 1,000 forest guards and reiterated his administration’s resolve to defeat insecurity and ensure the safe return of all abducted persons across the country.

Additionally, a specialised security unit with advanced rescue capabilities has been directed to intensify operations aimed at securing the release of the kidnapped pupils and teachers.
