President Bola Tinubu has expressed sadness over the death of Peter Onwubuariri, an Assistant Director, Media, at the Presidential Villa and former North American Correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
Onwubuariri, who reportedly died after a prolonged illness, had a career spanning journalism, public service and media operations at the Presidential Villa.
His death was announced in a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
Tinubu described the deceased as a dedicated journalist and public servant whose career and contributions earned him the respect of colleagues within the media and government circles.
The President noted that Onwubuariri was transferred from NAN to the Presidential Villa in 2014, where he subsequently served under three successive administrations.
He was part of the media teams of former Presidents Goodluck Jonathan and Muhammadu Buhari before continuing his service under the Tinubu administration.
According to the President, Onwubuariri brought considerable professional experience to his assignments, having covered major national and international issues, including politics, foreign affairs, telecommunications and finance.
Tinubu also commended his understanding of the relationship between the government and the media, as well as his sound judgement in carrying out his responsibilities.
Before his posting to the Presidential Villa, Onwubuariri rose through the ranks at NAN and attained the position of Assistant Editor-in-Chief.
The President said his years of service reflected his professionalism, diligence and commitment to journalism and public service.
“Peter was a dedicated journalist and a committed public servant whose professionalism and calm disposition earned him the respect of his colleagues and associates,” Tinubu said.
He further described Onwubuariri’s service across three administrations as evidence of his competence, integrity and dedication to national duty.
“His years of service to three administrations are a testament to his competence, integrity and commitment to duty,” the President added.
Tinubu said the late journalist would be remembered for his wealth of experience and contributions to journalism, the Presidential Villa and national service.
“His passing is a great loss to the Presidential Villa, the media fraternity and Nigeria. He will be remembered for his diligence, his wealth of experience and his contributions to journalism and national service,” he said.
The President extended his condolences to Onwubuariri’s wife, Catherine, his three children, members of his extended family, colleagues and friends.
He prayed for strength for the bereaved family and asked God Almighty to grant the deceased eternal rest.
