POWA PRESIDENT CELEBRATES RESILIENCE OF POLICE WIVES, UNVEILS WELFARE PROGRAMMES

The National President of the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA), Chief Mrs. Mutiat Olufunmilola Disu, has described police wives as the unseen strength behind the Nigerian Police Force, saying their sacrifices deserve greater recognition and support.

She stated this while declaring open the 2026 POWA National Convention in Abuja, themed “The Resilient Woman: Navigating Life’s Challenges with Strength, Purpose and Grace.”

Mrs. Disu said the convention was organised to recognise the sacrifices of police wives and equip them with the tools needed to improve their health, emotional well-being and economic independence.

“Today is more than the opening of another convention. It is the gathering of women whose stories are rarely told, whose sacrifices are often unseen, yet whose strength quietly keeps the Nigerian Police Force standing,” she said.

She noted that behind every police officer is a woman who endures long periods of separation, uncertainty and the responsibility of caring for the family.

“Every police officer wears a uniform. But behind every uniform is another uniform that no one sees. It is the invisible uniform of the wife who waits,” she added.

Mrs. Disu said her administration has expanded healthcare and empowerment programmes for police families, including free medical outreach, eye care services, scholarships, economic support and assistance for widows.

She said recent visits to police barracks revealed the financial challenges faced by many police families, reinforcing POWA’s resolve to develop programmes that respond to their real needs.

“Healthcare, education, mental wellness, economic empowerment and support for widows and children are not just programmes, they are promises. Promises that no police family should feel forgotten,” she said.

She urged participants to leave the convention stronger and better equipped to face life’s challenges, stressing that empowering police wives ultimately strengthens families, the Police Force and national security.
