A Nigerian lawyer has sparked reactions online after explaining the meaning of “self-recognizance bail” following reports that Linus Williams aka BLord was granted bail under the condition.
The lawyer broke down the legal term in simple language, helping many Nigerians understand why some individuals are released without a surety while others are not.
BLord Granted Bail on Self-Recognizance
Reports had earlier surfaced that BLord was granted bail on self-recognizance, a legal term that left many Nigerians confused and searching for explanations online.
The lawyer explained that the decision is based on trust and perceived credibility of the accused person in society, rather than financial guarantees or sureties.
Explanation of Bail Conditions
He contrasted self-recognizance bail with the common bail system where suspects are required to present a surety, someone who will be held responsible if they fail to appear in court.
According to him, people without strong financial standing often struggle with bail conditions because they are seen as more likely to abscond, making sureties mandatory in their cases.
However, in self-recognizance bail, the court releases a person based on their reputation, status, and perceived reliability, with only minimal conditions such as surrendering travel documents.
In his words:
“So BLord has been granted bail, and he was granted bail on self-recognizance. I’m not prophet but I know many Nigerians are confused and asking, ‘What does self-recognizance mean?’ I’m here to explain it to you.
Normally, if you’re poor… they will say bring surety… that surety is somebody that will take you on bail…
Because you’re poor, they don’t usually trust you…
But self-recognizance is now: ‘We know you, we know you have a lot of businesses, you cannot possibly leave them and run away… you are enough surety for yourself.’
So go. But we trust you to be coming to court.
The moral lesson of this video is: hustle o! Don’t ever be broke. Nobody will trust you. If you’re broke and something gets missing, you’re number one suspect. You have to hustle.”
