The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has launched an investigation into allegations of widespread extortion by its personnel along the Lagos-Seme border corridor.
The development follows viral online reports accusing officers of misconduct at the busy international route. In response, the Comptroller General of Immigration, Kemi Nandap, ordered the immediate suspension of comptrollers in charge of the affected commands to ensure a transparent probe.
In a statement issued by the Service Public Relations Officer, DCI Akinsola Akinlabi, the NIS leadership strongly condemned the alleged actions, describing them as unacceptable and a clear violation of the agency’s core values and operational standards.
The Service said a comprehensive investigation has been initiated to identify all officers involved, stressing that appropriate disciplinary measures would be enforced without delay against anyone found culpable.
Reaffirming its commitment to professionalism, the NIS assured the public that it remains dedicated to delivering efficient services at all entry and exit points, adding that acts capable of eroding public trust will not be tolerated.
The agency also urged citizens to report misconduct through its 24-hour contact centre and official social media platforms, noting that internal accountability mechanisms are being strengthened to uphold discipline and integrity across its operations.
