A lady has stirred conversations on social media after narrating how her mother confronted and beat a school staff member who severely punished her younger sister over a failed quiz.
Story of punishment sparks reactions online
According to the lady, the incident happened after the school contacted her mother to report that her sister suddenly developed a fever and had to be taken home.
Suspicious about the sudden illness, the woman said her mother rushed back from work and discovered that the child had allegedly been flogged mercilessly by a female staff member, popularly referred to as “aunty” in many Nigerian schools.
“One ‘Aunty’ at school flogged my sister mercilessly for failing a quiz, to the point that she threw up. They had to take her home because she started running a fever,” she said.
“She went out, bought four canes, and headed to the school. Unfortunately for the aunty, my mum caught her off guard in the school compound, broke all the canes on her body, and continued with her hands. The aunty saw pepper that day,” she added.
Incident revives debate over corporal punishment
The narration has since reignited debates about corporal punishment in schools across Nigeria, with many users condemning excessive discipline against children.
Cases involving harsh punishment in schools have repeatedly generated outrage in recent years.
In 2023, several parents and advocacy groups demanded stricter monitoring of teachers after reports of students suffering injuries from excessive flogging surfaced online.
The lady further claimed that the staff member involved was dismissed by the school management shortly after the confrontation.
