The Katsina State Government has dismissed as “baseless and unfounded” allegations that it sponsored Hajj pilgrimage for bandit leaders or criminals, describing the claim as a deliberate falsehood aimed at misleading the public.
In a press release dated June 24, 2026 and signed by Dr. Nasir Muazu, Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, the government said the allegation was made by one Bashir Kurfi during a programme aired on Trust TV.
“Deliberate falsehood”
“The Katsina State Government wishes to categorically refute and strongly condemn the false and misleading statement… in which he alleged that the state government sponsored Hajj pilgrimage for bandit leaders or any individuals involved in banditry and other criminal activities,” the statement read.
The government said the claim was “entirely baseless, devoid of any factual basis” and a politically motivated attempt to distract from successes recorded by security agencies with state support in fighting banditry across the state.
Accuses critics of politicizing security
Dr. Muazu accused certain individuals and groups of politicizing security issues for personal gain, alleging they were dissatisfied with the government’s refusal to “patronize their questionable schemes and fraudulent ventures designed to divert scarce public resources.”
The state challenged the accusers to “substantiate their claims with credible and verifiable evidence.” It warned that failure to do so would force government to “explore all lawful means available to protect its reputation and hold those responsible accountable for spreading false and defamatory information.”
Call for public support
The government urged residents and Nigerians to disregard the “malicious allegations” and continue supporting security agencies working to restore peace and stability in Katsina.
It reaffirmed commitment to supporting ongoing security operations and implementing measures that guarantee safety and prosperity for all residents.
The denial comes amid renewed operations by security forces against bandit groups in Katsina and other North-West states.
