The Anambra State Police Command has rescued a 37-year-old woman, Anurika Nweme, from an angry mob and commenced investigation into an alleged child trafficking incident at Divine Mercy Hospital, Awada, Obosi.
In a statement dated June 25, 2026 and signed by Police Public Relations Officer SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Command said operatives attached to Awada Divisional Headquarters rescued the suspect from the mob at the hospital premises on Eze Iweka Road.
According to eyewitness accounts, the incident occurred in the afternoon of June 23, 2026. The suspect reportedly gained access to the hospital disguised in attire resembling that of a nurse and was observed making secret video recordings of newborn babies in the maternity ward.
When questioned by hospital staff and others present, she allegedly claimed to be an employee of the hospital. However, upon verification, the hospital management confirmed she was not a member of staff.
Police said the suspect is currently in protective custody and is assisting investigating officers to identify others who may be involved in the alleged crime.
“Further developments on the investigation will be communicated as they unfold,” the statement added.
The rescue comes amid growing public concern over mob justice in Anambra and other states. Police have repeatedly warned citizens against taking the law into their own hands and urged them to report suspicious activities to security agencies for proper investigation and prosecution.
