A Nigerian man has reportedly discovered that his younger brother dropped out of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) without informing him, despite helping to fund his education after their father’s death.
According to the account shared by a neighbour, the man was the first son of his family and took responsibility for helping his younger brother through university after their father passed away.
Having supported his brother’s education, he expected him to proceed with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme after graduation.
However, the younger brother reportedly refused to register for the scheme, explaining that he was not interested in participating. His elder brother subsequently allowed him to make his own decision.
How the elder brother uncovered the truth
Two years later, the younger brother was still at home without a job, prompting his elder brother to step in again and help him find employment.
To begin the process, the elder brother asked him to provide his academic credentials.
It was at this point that he reportedly discovered that his younger brother had dropped out of UNIPORT in 300 level without telling him.
The discovery meant that the younger brother had not completed the degree programme his elder brother believed he had supported him through.
The account did not disclose why the younger brother left the university or how he explained his decision to his elder brother after the discovery.
Story highlights challenges of family sacrifice
The incident highlights the difficulties that can arise when family members make significant sacrifices to support their relatives’ education and future.
It also raises questions about honesty, responsibility and communication among siblings, particularly when one person takes on a parental role following the death of a family member.
Although the circumstances surrounding the dropout remain unclear, the discovery could be a difficult revelation for an elder brother who had invested in his younger sibling’s education while expecting him to graduate.
